A nostalgic track about growing up

lyrics

There was a shop run by cheerful cockneys
Where I worked for 5 years or more
In the flatrroofed pub on the corner of the street
Lived a girl who I used to adore

But she left me for my best friend
It took weeks for my poor broken heart to mend
I bet everything has now changed
Down on Blacktiles Lane

There was a school where I started to learn
It’s still there but the name s have all changed
I’ve since run schools of my own
I wonder if my teachers would have found that strange

But people change as they grow old
I’m not the boy I was who always did as he was told
I bet everything now has changed
Down on Blacktiles Lane

At the end of the lane was a farmhouse
Where most of my childhood was spent
And 26 acres of farmland
For the games that we used to invent

But they built a dual carriageway through
Cutting most of the fields in two
I bet everything now has changed down on Blacktiles Lane

You can look back at things over time
And ask how many of these memories really are mine?
Because nostalgia plays tricks on the old
Was it really that hot or really that cold?

And the summers are much shorter now
And I have lovely children of my own somehow
I hope they see what good remains
Yes I hope they see what good remains
Remains from that boy, down on Blacktiles Lane

Come and take a walk with me
Through some ancient memories
